Well I might as well just put this out there folks I am pro choice and pro reproductive rights. If you are not aware women are being assaulted in an all out war against our reproductive rights and so far we are losing. So in current times being pro-choice will result in getting some serious shit from people. At times you will be taken by surprise, or unsure of what to say in return (especially when dealing with family, friends, co-workers). Let us be honest, you are not going to change the mind of a hardcore anti-choicer anymore than they could chnager yours. SO instead of getting into a screaming match or being verbally assaulted while remaining silent, here are some remarks I always use to basically shut people the hell up and let me get back to whatever I was doing!
1.Women who get abortions just become pregnant at inconvenient times and would rather go on vacation then have a baby:
You might laugh, but I was in a public speaking class where a guy who was anti-choice actually said this. The assumptions about said women in this scenario is A. They do not have children B. going on vacation would be impossible while pregnant or with children (I am sure it is harder but I know plenty of people who vacationed while pregnant or with kids) and C. That even if going on vacation is inconvenienced by pregnancy or kids, somehow getting an abortion is soooooo much more convenient. You could hit them with statistics which show that most women who have abortions ALREADY HAVE children or you could just be a smart ass and reply "Why yes, in fact most women I know get abortions just because they want to run to Wawa and being pregnant is too much of a burden when participating in Hoagiefest."
2. Women who have abortions are just carefree sluts who do not use contraception and should have to pay the price for being sexually active.
Again, I have actually had this said to me. For the record I do not buy into the whole "slut" calling thing because to me it is just a way to control women's sexuality and make them feel shitty for ACTUALLY enjoying and desiring sex. But let's go on the whole not using contraception angle. As some of you may know, abstinence only education is the go to source for public school student's information. The lack of effectiveness of abstinence only education combined with conservatives move to restrict access to contraception and STD testing moves to basically ensure that young people are not getting the proper information or resources to have a healthy sex life void of unintended pregnancies. Add to that the whole macho ideal of not wearing a condom and most women have a hell of a fight trying to use any kind of contraception. Over the counter most brith control pills range from $40-$60 and insurance companies are notorious for not wanting to cover the pill. I.U.D.s are a great form of birth control, but without insurance they range from $300-$800 out of pocket. Women always have to pay the price for ebing sexually active while the men never do, because they are expected to be the cavemen chasing us around and we are to be the ones thwarting their advances which in my opinion is a shit gender role for men by implying they are nothing more than sexually deviant animals and not logical human beings. But since logic most likely won't work on this person, I would simply suggest that women have as many kids as possible and the government should foot the bill for raising them and for college tuition. Since this person is most likely anti-welfare and government assistance (which kind shows the stupidity of a person who does not believe in birth control but does not want to assist in rasing a child born into poverty) this will send them over the edge and hopefully will draw attention to what a massive douche bag they are.
3. Women who have abortions are going against their "Mothering nature," and are baby killers:
Yeah this person is usually Grade A prick. Now I am not even going to get into the whole what constitutes viable life thing because that is a seperate post in itself. What I usually respond with is "Yes it is so much better for a fetus to be born to a mother who does not want/cannot logistically handle it, possibly be abused, possibly beneglected, possibly live in a dire economic situation, and possibly never know what it is to be loved and appreciated." Also in conjuction with this statement you get the Once a woman has a baby there is an instant connection and she becomes a nurturing mother. Well this case recently grabbed headlines, and there is also this.
If all else fails and this person still argues with you, walk away, if it is a guy tell him when he grows a uterus and vagina then you'll consider his position, or ask them when they are adopting all the unwanted children in this coutnry currently in foster care.
